Office of Personnel Management (OPM) now extends benefits to federal employees and annuitants who have legally married a spouse of the same-sex. This decision does not extend coverage to registered domestic partners or those employees or annuitants in civil unions. Supreme Court ruled that Americans in same-sex marriages are entitled to equal protection and equal treatment under the law, as it held that Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional.
